What Jill does in this film — leaving voicemails for her dead sister, narrating her messy San Francisco life into a number that no longer belongs to anyone she knows — is not a quirky rom-com premise. It's a portrait of how grief actually behaves. It doesn't look like crying in a dark room. It looks like talking to someone who can't answer, because the alternative is silence, and silence confirms the thing you're not ready to confirm.

The film's setup turns that private ritual into plot when the number gets reassigned to Wes, a reticent Austin real estate agent who starts receiving Jill's extremely candid updates without warning. But the comedy is just the surface. Underneath it, the film is asking a harder question: what do we do with the words that still need somewhere to go?

Why Cystic Fibrosis Changes Everything

Isabelle's death was not sudden. She had cystic fibrosis, which means Jill knew, on some level, for years. That changes the texture of loss completely. When a death comes without warning, grief arrives as shock. When you've watched someone live inside an illness long enough to call it by name, something else happens – you rehearse the loss before it comes, and then when it comes, you find out that rehearsal doesn't protect you at all.

What that kind of anticipatory grief produces is a particular shape of regret. Not the regret of things left entirely unsaid, but the regret of things said too carefully, visits conducted with too much cheer, conversations that stayed in safe territory because no one wanted to make it heavier than it already was. Jill's voicemails feel like overcompensation for all of that. She's giving Isabelle the unfiltered version now. The one she maybe softened while Isabelle was alive.

The sisters' shared rituals — the music, the references, the private language – feel urgent when you understand that context. These weren't casual habits. They were the architecture of a relationship that knew its time was finite.

A song a person loved becomes something else after they're gone. It stops being a song and starts being a door.

At the film's climax, a DJ plays Robyn's Dancing on My Own, and the film presents it as Jill and Isabelle's song – something that belonged to the two of them before anyone else could claim it. Wes hears it and reads it as a sign. He finds Jill and they dance. On paper, that's a romantic beat. Watching it, it's something more complicated than romance.

What shared music does between people who love each other is create a language that doesn't require explanation. You don't have to say "this is how I feel about you" or "this is what we are to each other." The song already says it. So when that song plays after one of the people is gone, it doesn't feel like coincidence. It feels like communication. The listener isn't being irrational when they take it as a sign. They're responding to a language they were taught by someone who no longer speaks any other way.

That's what the film understands, and what most romantic comedies miss entirely: grief has its own grammar, and music is one of its oldest forms.

The Easter Egg Is a Psychological Event, Not a Trick

Director Leah McKendrick was genuinely frightened of what she was about to do. She told Entertainment Weekly that the choice felt like a precipice – either it would be epic or it would ruin everything – and she went ahead anyway. What she placed at the end of the film is a blink-and-miss-it moment: Isabelle, out of focus, in the background, present for only a few seconds. She wears the same shirt she dances in at the hospital. And then she's gone.

That is not an easter egg in the way a hidden logo or a franchise wink is an easter egg. It's something more precise. It gives the viewer the exact experience of grief's most disorienting feature – the visitation, the flash of presence, the sensation that someone was just here and you can't be entirely sure you didn't imagine it. You watch it and you feel the same thing Jill feels every time she presses call on a dead woman's number. Almost. Almost enough.

The costuming detail matters more than it might seem. McKendrick didn't dress Isabelle in something neutral. She put her in the shirt from the hospital, the one from the scene where she was still alive and still dancing. She gave grief a continuity. She said: she's the same person she always was. She just stepped out of frame.

Why This Film Found You

The film went through a long evolution before it became the version that reached you. When it was first announced in 2019, it had a different lead, a different director, a different studio. Something in that original configuration didn't survive, and the film that eventually emerged – directed by McKendrick, starring Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson, released on Netflix in June 2026 – is the one that landed with 88 percent of critics responding warmly. The average score stayed modest at 6.7 out of 10, which is the kind of rating that says: the craft is fine, but that's not why people are watching it at midnight.

Films find their audiences when they locate a feeling the audience already had but hadn't named. The grief mechanics here – the voicemail ritual, the anticipated loss, the shared song, the blink-and-gone cameo – are precise in a way that commercial rom-coms rarely attempt. The film wasn't trying to be about grief. It ended up being about grief anyway, because the people who made it got the mechanics right, and the people who needed it recognized themselves in every unanswered call.

You keep certain voicemails in your phone for years. You don't listen to them often. But you don't delete them either, because deleting them would mean the conversation is over, and you're not ready to call it that.
