The Directors Who Built It Deliberately

The salon scene in Battle of the Sexes is where the theory becomes fact.

Directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris – who also made Little Miss Sunshine – were precise about what they were doing. The scene follows Billie Jean King, played by Emma Stone, as hairdresser Marilyn Barnett cuts and styles her hair. Every element was chosen to bring the audience into King's skin: the scissors, the warm proximity, the quality of attention one person gives to another in a space that is already soft by design. Dayton and Faris described the intention plainly. They used ASMR to build intimacy, to make the audience feel seduced alongside their protagonist. Not seduced in a narrative sense. Seduced into her nervous system.

That is a directorial choice. It is also a specific craft decision about how sound and proximity create identification – how the body of the audience can be made to mirror the body on screen. The salon scene is not a rest between dramatic scenes. It is the scene. The ASMR was the point.

What the Audience Was Actually Chasing

Nearly everyone who uses ASMR content regularly cites relaxation as the reason. Close to the same number are using it to manage stress or move toward sleep. These numbers, drawn from large-scale surveys of ASMR audiences, describe people who have found a reliable way to regulate their own nervous systems and return to it when the day has cost them too much.

Film audiences who return to certain quiet scenes are doing the same thing. Not for plot – they already know the plot. For the sound of the fitting room in Phantom Thread. For the brush moving across canvas in Portrait of a Lady on Fire. For scissors in a salon.

This is not passive watching. It is active self-regulation using film as a tool, the same way someone opens a familiar ASMR channel at eleven at night not because the content is new but because the effect is reliable. The emotional function is identical. The medium is different. The intention – to return the body to something bearable – is the same.

Cinema does something ASMR channels cannot always replicate: it attaches that calm to characters whose inner lives we already care about. The relaxation deepens because it is shared. We are not just soothed. We are soothed alongside someone.

Cinema Is Beginning to Do This Consciously

Until recently, the ASMR qualities in film existed mostly by instinct or happy accident, or in the case of Dayton and Faris, by explicit intention that went largely undiscussed in the critical conversation around their work.

That is starting to shift. A peer-reviewed study published in the CINEJ Cinema Journal in 2025 set out to do something that would have seemed unnecessary ten years ago: treat ASMR technique in film as a formal subject of investigation, examining how these methods affect audience emotion and making the case that the film industry should understand them as deliberate tools. The fact that a cinema journal now considers this worth studying means the gap between ASMR as YouTube phenomenon and ASMR as cinematic language is closing. Directors who were already doing this intuitively are about to get a vocabulary for it.

What viewers discovered privately – that certain films do something measurable to the body, not just the mind – is beginning to enter the room where films are made and studied.

You will never watch a quiet scene the same way again, because now you know that the sound of scissors through hair or a needle crossing fabric was never incidental – it was the whole point.
